OSH Appoints Dr. Tim McAfee as New Director

As announced this morning by the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (CDC):

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Tim McAfee to the position of Director, Office on Smoking and Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, CDC, effective September 12, 2010.

Tim McAfee, M.D., M.P.H., joins CDC as the Director, Office on Smoking and Health, following a distinguished career in tobacco control as a clinician, researcher, and public health evaluator. Since 2003, he has served as the Chief Medical Officer for Free & Clear. He helped found and served on the Board of Directors of the North American Quitline Consortium, as well as numerous state and national tobacco policy advisory groups.

Tim McAfee, MD, MPH has worked for 20 years in population-based and clinical preventive health, with a strong focus on tobacco control. His accomplishments include:
  • Leading efforts of a 500,000-member non-profit regional healthcare system successfully lowering smoking prevalence from 25% to 15% (Group Health Cooperative),
  • Founding a company (Free & Clear) providing quitline services to 26 states, 400 health plans and employers, and 300,000 individuals/year
  • Serving on the Washington State Attorney General’s and Secretary of Health’s task forces that designed a multi-component tobacco control plan resulting in the state moving from 18th to 6th in the nation for smoking prevalence
  • Creating and setting strategic direction for an autonomous research unit conducting multiple large externally-funded multi-institution trials
  • Co-founder and elected Board of Directors member of the North American Quitline Consortium
  • Leading an evidence review team responsible for prevention guideline development and dissemination
  • Authoring the W.H.O. quitline manual for low and middle income countries
Dr McAfee is currently Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Clinical and Behavioral Sciences for Free & Clear, a Seattle-based health care organization dedicated to supporting health-related behavior change at the individual, organizational and population level. Free & Clear provides telephone-based and web-assisted programs to help people quit tobacco use, provides state-sponsored trainings for healthcare providers, and collaborates on multiple public-domain research studies. Programs for people interested in losing weight, improving physical activity and nutrition are also delivered.

Dr. McAfee received his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Minnesota. He completed his M.P.H. and M.S. at the University of California, Berkley. Dr. McAfee obtained his medical degree from the University of California San Francisco and Masters in Health Policy and Public Health (Epidemiology) from UC Berkeley. He completed his residency training at Group Health Cooperative (Seattle), and a fellowship at the University of Washington. He is currently affiliated with the Group Health Research Institute as well as the Department of Health Services in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington.

Dr. McAfee is a co-investigator and Principal Investigator on multiple research studies focusing on questions relating to effectiveness and dissemination of phone-based and web-assisted tobacco cessation programs in medical systems and through government-sponsored quit lines.
